It used to be that a degree was considered a necessity to build a thriving professional career. Plus the expectation was that you worked for ONE company for the rest of your career. Not only are some of these ideas dated, but they could actually hold you back if you are looking to advance or transition in your career.

When it came to choosing a degree for University, I wanted to go down the media and communication path, but my Dad wanted me to go down a professional path like medicine, or law, or accounting. None of those appealed to me and so the compromise was to study for an Economics degree. It was a box ticking exercise rather than a real passion, and after a number of years in the corporate world, I discovered my love for teaching and coaching.

As a career coach, I have noticed that many people are caught between satisfying themselves and meeting the expectations of their parents and family, and are doing so based on dated ideas such as;

  1. The need for a degree in order to transition into a new career
  2. The quest to find a company to build a career in
  3. Picking one career as opposed to building a multi-passionate career, which is increasingly becoming the norm
  4. Becoming an expert in one thing. Many of the careers that we have now will become obsolete in the next 10 years
  5. Only pivoting careers when you are “young”. You can transition at any time
